We know you know that it is so important to commit to not just taking care of physical needs but also our mental needs as a family unit. What's step one? That can be daunting. That's why we found an amazing Family Action Plan from the National PTA website.

Why do an action plan? "Making small changes in lifestyle and behavior as a family today can make a big difference for everyone’s mental health and well-being tomorrow." And if you don't create a plan the likelihood of you making effort to put you and your family's mental health needs first may never become a priority.

So what's in the action plan?

👉 A checklist of some of the things you want to focus on first as a family such as eating healthier, family check-in meetings, or screen free times.

👉 A checklist of what specifically the parent/caregiver will be committing to each day/week that supports their child.

👉 A checklist of what the child will commit to daily/weekly

Today we are going over some simple water safety reminders as Summer is in full swing and pool time is here!

DYK: Drownings are the leading cause of injury-related death in children ages one to four years old in the United States. In Arizona, children in this age group are drowning at double the national average, and most often in swimming pools. So as a community we want to do everything we can to keep our children safe around water.

Water Safety Tips:

💧 Adult supervision is crucial when it comes to protecting our children around water. The supervising adult should not have any distractions such as phones, books, and definitely no alcoholic beverages

💧Swimming lessons are another way to protect children around water. They can help prevent drownings by allowing the child to swim out of the pool or to keep afloat until an adult reaches them.

💧Have a family meeting prior to entering water, go over water rules and why they are important.

💧When near a pool, lock any pool gates each time someone enters or exits. Never prop a gate open.

SRP offers a comprehensive checklist and other resources to prevent water emergencies, check it out at https://www.srpnet.com/customer-service/safety/water-pool

Summer is an ideal season to prioritize self-care! Take advantage of the warm weather by engaging in outdoor activities, soaking up the sun, and focusing on your well-being. Use our self-care checklist to get some ideas for taking care of yourself this summer.

💤 Get some good SLEEP: A regular sleep routine and getting more exercise are all part of healthy sleep patterns that are proven to be critical to mind and body.

🌷 Get OUTSIDE: Get into nature but be smart about it - find places with decent shade for breaks and always have water on hand. Arizona heat is no joke!

📖 Read a new BOOK: Go to your local library or bookstore and pick a new book to read - or better yet see if they have a "blind date" wrapped book for more mystery and fun.

💧 Stay HYDRATED: Triple digit heat means we need to keep water on hand at all time. Stay hydrated and your body will thank you.

🌵 COMMUNITY events: Search online (or check out our digital bulletin board https://www.standupaj.org/eventsaj) for events going on locally. Consider outdoor movies, yard sales, festivals, farmer’s markets, concerts or dance classes. Making fun plans can help you feel excited and give you something to look forward to.

📝 Start a JOURNAL: Writing can be a great way to express how you feel and check-in with your emotions. Or, it can just be a place to doodle or draw. Make it whatever you need.
