The holidays are here and are a joy for some, but during this time many may feel stressed, sad, or lonely, especially those struggling with their mental health or substance use.

It's important to take a step back and prioritize your mental well-being during this time. Remember, the holidays are meant to bring joy and happiness, so don't forget to find moments of peace and relaxation amidst the chaos.

Strategies for supporting your mental health:

1.         Pay attention to your feelingsRecognizing your feelings is the first step to addressing and nurturing them.

2.         Develop a plan for when you are feeling stressed, sad, or lonelyThis plan may include calling a friend or family member, going for a walk, or engaging in an activity that brings joy.

3.         Practice self-careIt is important to schedule time for yourself and activities that recharge your mind and body.

4.         Connect with communityIf you can’t be near loved ones during the holidays, finding a supportive community through clubs, support groups etc.

5.         Support othersCheck in on loved ones who may be alone or struggling during the holiday season. Helping a friend or neighbor not only gives joy to others, but it can improve your own happiness and well-being.

6.         Avoid alcohol and drugsHaving a plan for navigating social events and feelings of loneliness, can reduce the risk of substance use.

If you’re feeling stressed out, your kids are probably experiencing something similar. So here are some stress busting ideas for the whole family to try out when thing's get tough-


✔️ Get some exercise, make it something you actually enjoy like sports or a walk with the family.

✔️ Create some healthy and delicious meals together as a family, try a new recipe and maybe start a tradition

✔️ Start a gratitude journal, especially beneficial during the holiday season when it becomes easy to compare yourself to other families.

✔️ Find something to make yourself laugh, it can help flip a switch in your mind to ease some stress.

✔️ Put away the phones as a family for an hour and just play some board games. Unplug together!

✔️ Get good sleep! Make bedtime relaxing and allow your mind to actually shut down and recharge.
